Sometimes You Get Lucky – Fall Reflections In New England

Fall Reflections In New England

Fall Reflections At Lower Baker Pond, New Hampshire

Sometimes you get lucky.   My wife and I were driving from Acadia National Park on the Maine coast to Woodstock, Vermont.   I had researched the heck out of both those locations, but didn’t know much about what lay between.   We were very tired, on a seemingly endless secondary highway winding it’s way generally westward.   This was a remote area, towns and businesses were few and far between.   Eventually it became clear that a….ummm…..’rest stop’  was needed.    I parked on the highway shoulder as safely as possible, walked about 20 feet from the car, and there it was….a mirror smooth lake reflecting a hillside of spectacular fall foliage.   I set up the tripod and shot a few bracketed sets of exposures, one set of which was combined using Photomatix software into the HDR image above.    Google Earth provided me with the name of the lake – Lower Baker Pond.     Sometimes you get lucky, just make sure you have your camera ready.

  2. This is absolutely stunning. I learned on my road trip out west this summer that a true photographer must ALWAYS have their camera ready. You really never know what is going to appear right before you, begging for a photo. Kudos for being featured on Freshly Pressed! I’m glad to have found this blog, you’re very talented and I look forward to continue reading.

After having checked out your galleries, I don’t think that there’s much luck involved in the creation of this image. It seems you have a great eye for composition and your skill with HDR only increases the beauty.

    Nice work!

That photo should be SOLD! I’m not a photographer but I appreciate the beauty in things like this. Taking pictures of nature and people are my favorite thing to do. When they come out this wonderful, I’m very proud of them and want to share it with the world! Sometimes I go as far as enlarging the print and framing it. We’ve decided the artwork in our house will be our own. We tend to appreciate it more that way! Thanks for sharing.

  54. I think you are using way too much HDR effect, your picture is nice but when you get to a surrealistic effect, your picture dosn’t gets that much attention from a Pro, is just a comment, you might do better!

  64. My brother thinks this picture is fake, but I think it’s real. How do you tell it’s real or not?

    October 11, 2010 at 7:05 pm

    • Well, it depends on how you define real. It’s a real lake, real hill, real trees, real reflection, I was there. This image is the result of a technique known as HDR (High Dynamic Range) where multiple exposures (3 in this case) of the same exact scene, at different exposure values, are combined in software. Depending on how you tweak the finished result, the scene can take on a sense of heightened reality, or perhaps unreality, depending on how you choose to describe it. Hope that answers your question, thanks for the comment.

  111. Kathy

You have some beautiful pictures on your site. Fall is my favorite season – the cooler weather, the gorgeous colors – it makes me feel alive. I love Vermont and at one point many years ago I traveled from Maine to Woodstock, VT. I don’t remember much of that trip. But when I think of Vermont, I remember a trip we took as a family about 8 years ago. My parents purchased land in Warren and we walked on that land. At that moment, everything was perfect, sharing a special time with my husband, son, and parents, and life was good. The land is undeveloped and will probably stay that way until it’s sold. It was passed on to my brother and I when pancreatic cancer took my mom’s life. Although my dream is to live in a log cabin in the woods and Vermont would be perfect, the facts of my life will not allow this to happen. So I will remember the good times and hope to visit Vermont again with my family. Thank you for sharing your pictures. Beautiful.
